Building Shapes

One of our math tasks this week was to work together to make shapes using skipping ropes. We weren't allowed to let the skipping rope go. It was quite easy to make a rectangle but making a square have the exact same length sides was tricky. So was making a 5 pronged star. We had to communicate with our group to make decisions.

Kia ora e te whanau,
Welcome to akomanga waru (room 8). My students call me Whaea Kat. I teach year 5 & 6 students of Kea hub which is in Kauri Team and support Kapa Haka in our school.
I am excited to get to know everyone and have a fantastic year of learning with the tamariki. Our year will start a little different with all of the senior students having to wear masks. It is a good idea for each student to have a water bottle as you get quite thirsty and tired trying to speak through a mask all day.
You can contact me at crichmond@hameast.school.nz if you need anything.

Bubble Toru

Kia ora koutou,

This is a little snapshot of Bubble Toru at school. We are in room 18 and the hub next to room 17. The teachers in our bubble are Whaea Kat, Whaea Robyn and Mrs Tyler. Mrs McKenzie comes to help us out too.

We played on Tōtara whenua, in the sandpit, with the basketball and used the sports equipment.

We found a wriggly stick insect.

We went for a walk to Putikitiki along te ara o ngahere to the new outdoor learning area.

What have you all being doing at home? Send me a photo of you via your goggle drive or send me a text.

Scavenger Hunt

We had a scavenger hunt on Putikitiki and Tōtara whenua. We worked together to find all the items on the list. It was fun being able to be on Te Ara o Ngahere (the nature trail) in the sun catching up with our friends after being in lockdown.

Bubble #2 At School

I'm in bubble #2 at school so our learning looks a little bit different to what you are doing at home. We are based in rooms 8 and 9 in Kauri block. Thanks Sarah for sharing your room with Greg, Ms O'Neil, myself and the students in our bubble.

We have to use the toilets down at Totara whenua. We are allowed in the sandpit but not on the playground.

We have morning tea and lunch outside on the deck.

We play on Putikitiki.

We play card games.

While we have been in lockdown Jessie has been busy too. Here are a couple of videos of Ally. In one she is preparing breakfast and in the other she is doing mahi toi. What have you been having for breakfast?

Grandparents Day

There was a buzz of excitement around the school as grandparents and whānau were coming into our classes. We were welcoming them into our class and sharing our learning.  We were doing our question of the day.

Question of the Day:

If you had to measure your height in Oreos,

how many Oreos tall do you think you would be?

How could you work it out?

We found out that an Oreo cookie was 1cm thick. We used blocks and rulers to work out how tall we all were.

There was lots of thinking and discussions happening.

It was so lovely to have so many of our whānau coming in to our
akomanga. We asked them patai about all sorts of things that
they remembered when they were our age, like school, what did
they do for fun, where did they play, what did they watch on tv and
even if there was colour in the olden days. That got a few laughs.

Tuakana - Teina

Between akomanga 17 and akomanga 18 there is a hub space which we are using before school.  It is an area where we can read, draw, play, talk and work with our friends. We are learning to introduce ourselves to others, ask patai (questions) and make new friends. We are working on our tukana-teina relationships. Here are some of us exploring and building with the new magnets.

Welcome to Akomanga 17

Welcome to Akomanga tekau ma whitu. You can find our room on Tōtara whenua, the last classroom in the new block by the bamboo, near the big slide and under our beautiful Redwood tree. While we are found next to all the Tōtara classrooms we are in fact part of Kauri team. They are found at the top of the stairs which makes it easy for us to join the other year five and six tamariki.
We are lucky enough to have a big deck to work on, which makes our space feel so much bigger. Here are some photos of us learning about some activities that can be found in our room.

You can have lots of fun with your friends!
Popping it. Making clothes and hats. The list goes on.
There were so many smiles.

Taakaro Time

Taakaro time is when we get to explore, build, create, construct, design and direct our own learning. There was lego with other large building blocks, cars, dinosaurs, shells, driftwood, rocks, playing cards, coloured card, paper, stamp cutters for us to use.
Have a look at the photos and see what the tauira were doing.

How many house of cards can you make

So much creativity. I noticed people persevering with tasks when they got tricky. Other tauira were learning how to work with others and solve problems together. It was great to see so much self directed learning.
