What is a neuron?
Where do we find them?
Did you know that we have between 60-90 billion neurons in your brain?
If you counted to 1 billion it would take 33 years.
It would take about 1980 years to count to 60 billion
Neuroplasticity
Neurons create pathways.
We create pathways in our brain.
We need to shape and create our thoughts so that we have stronger pathways and then we believe the positive emotions that make us a better person.
It is important to tell ourselves good things.
eg I am really good at maths.
Mindfulness helps us to grow strong pathways to focus.

We love writing
We are always keen to write and even more excite when we have some great motivation. We watched a clip about Pandas and then had to choose a perspective to write from, either the panda or the zookeeper.

Science Experiment - Celery & dye
You will need:
celery
food colouring
jars
water
We had to wait a few days to see if anything changed.
Nature Trail
Did you know that we have a nature trail?
It is by the Kauri classrooms and a track leads from the top of the hill down to Putikitiki.
It is a beautiful place to sit, think, listen and sketch.
We wanted to soak in the experience of just relaxing and appreciating nature.
It is such an amazing view from the track down to Putikitiki.
The shapes that we notice are so striking.
Do you know the names of any of the plants in the photos?

Cyber Smart Infographics
Kauri Team have been learning about how to be Cyber Smart. We had to use infographics to show our learning.
But what is an infographic?
It is a way of sharing information using mainly pictures and minimally amounts of text.

St John's Visit
We were luck enough to learn what to do in an emergency. We need to remember DRS ABC, which means:
D - Dangers (check your safety first)
R - Response ("Can you hear me?" and shake their shoulders)
S - Send for help (Ring 111 for the ambulance)
A - Airway (tilt the head back & lift the chin.
B - Breathing (look at chest & stomach, fell for breath on cheek).
C - CPR (start compressions).
We got to practice compressions on the mannequins.
We also got to look in the ambulance, then Whaea Kat was allowed to turn the sirens on. They were very loud!

Pencils Writing Group
Pencils writing group working together to brainstorm a moment in time - Operetta.
Using the whiteboard write adjectives and phrases underneath.
Lots of discussion to be had about the Operetta.
Everyone loves using the whiteboard table.
Chilling out during Operetta.
Chilling out in between items during Operetta.
Great to see that some kids from Room 12 are in with us too, talking and playing games.
So many different costumes.
Kauri students showed how they could manage themselves with so many people coming and going for different items. They still remained calm. Well done.

Circle Time #3
Judy came in this week to run circle time.
She was talking to us about feelings and emotions.
We had to identify what feeling the person was showing on their face and whether it was a 'green' or positive emotion or a 'red' or negative emotion.
Then as a group we had to select a picture and assign the different words that the face may represent and justify our reasons.

Genuis hour - Basketball
These two boys were interested in basketball and famous basketball players. They came up with the idea of sharing their learning with the class on a poster. The shape of the poster was of a body, so they asked the tallest student at school if they could draw around him. There was a lot of laughter while they were doing this.

Peachgrove Intermediate Visit
All the Year 6 students in Kauri Team travelled by bus to Peachgrove Intermediate to get a 'taste' of life at Intermediate. We were greeted by their kapahaka group and some of their teachers.
Next we were split into three groups where we got to experience one of the arts and one of the technology options.
Some of us made toasted sandwiches and smoothies in food technology.
In Hard Materials technology, we used different tools to construct a small wooden box with a lid.
We used the computers,in digital technology, to design a name tag.
The Arts options were drama, dance and music.
It was great to catch up with our friends that used to be at Hamilton East School.
Thanks Peachgrove Intermediate.
We had a blast and can't wait to come next year.
