Swimming Sports, Friday 7th March

We can't wait for swimming sports next Friday!!!!!

A notice went home saying whether we were going to Matangi Pool
(which is way deeper and longer than the HES pool) or having swimming
sports in the school pool with Miss Suze and Ms Langdon.

Confident swimmers will go on bus to Matangi Pool and they need to
bring in $4 for the bus.

We hope some parents or whanau can come and cheer us on!

Swimming in Room 10

We have been swimming in the school pool every day for the last 5 weeks.
We are learning water confidence - floating, gliding, kicking and breathing.

All of us love getting in and swimming although it is getting a bit cold in the
mornings on some days and we are shivering and blue when we get out.

All of us love going under and playing games in the water.
All of us can do lengths of the pool using flutter boards.

Some of us are confident swimmers and can swim a whole length
of the pool without stopping and touching the bottom to take a breather.
We have been practicing freestyle, breaststroke (we like to call it frog stroke) and backstroke.

Hamish and Liam made a video about our swimming.

Selfies!

We have some very talented artists in Room 10.

We used bold colours to make our self portraits stand out.

The hardest part to draw is our nose. Miss Suze found a
programme that turned our photos into a sketch to
help us start drawing.

Finding the right colour to use for our skin was sometimes tricky.

Buddy reading with Room 3

We love buddy reading with Room 3 after Positive Assembly on Fridays.
Room 3 has cool new furniture to sit on.

When we are reading we look at the pictures and talk about them
with our buddies.  Our buddies are learning to read and talking about
the pictures is very important.

Thank you Shelley and Room 3 for sharing your new modern learning furniture with us!

Science in Room 10

I wonder?

How did it happen? wondered Max.

I wonder how the egg will get out? thought Lara.

I'm not sure how it worked but I'm amazed  said Alice.

I'm having a guess the hotness made the egg smaller so it could slip through thought Brooke.

The egg got inside because it was smoking and the egg got wet and slipped in the jar - no name.

The egg melted from the heat and could slide in thought Josh.

Our Class Treaty promises

We have explored the meaning of 'Getting Along With Everyone' in the HES toolkit,
talked about the importance of Waitangi Day and the Treaty of Waitangi
and read the 'Tree Hut Treaty'.

We think a treaty is a list of promises that you make so that both sides are
happy living together. Without a treaty and a set of rules we thought there
might be chaos and mayhem in our class!!

Below are some of the ideas we brainstormed (in small groups) as being the most important promises to make to each other.

We found that quite a few ideas came up in each others 'Top 5' - respect,
manners, including everyone, kindness, ask for help, think before you do,
show you are responsible, be positive, share, tell the truth and
make sure everyone's happy!

Watch this space for the next stage of our Class Treaty - the tea staining and flame grilled edges to make our treaty look like the Treaty of Waitangi treaty.

Turangawaewae - Our Place and Getting to know each other

Here we are playing a cool, co-operative game.
The aim of the game is to get the whole team to safety across the shark infested waters.....only using 3 hoops to get us across.

Before we started we talked about how we could do it.
It was difficult getting some people to listen to other's ideas.
We had to make sure not to leave anyone behind.

Each time we play this game we make changes to our
technique of getting to safety.

We came up with a rule that only 7 people at a time could be in the hoop.
If you touch the shark infested water outside the hoop you have to go back to the start.

The score so far is Boys 1 - Girls 2

Next challenge is mixed teams!

Kia Ora & welcome back to Room 10

Our HES gardens have flourished.
The vegetables are nearly ready to harvest.

We love swimming in the school pool.
We are learning to be swim safe.

We are recreating the gateway to the school for our room.
We look, draw, look at the photo and work in
small groups to sketch.

We are learning about the animals carved in the gateway.
The Fantail, the Lizard and the Taniwha.
The gateway is 15 years old and represents the
past, present and future students, teachers
and families at Hamilton East.
