The first of many posts about the fabulous Judi Billcliff, the poet and author who we were lucky enough to have come and visit with Kauri team.

Check out Judi's blog about her visit.

Learning about Volume

We have been learning how to estimate how much water a container can hold.

Did you know that liquid is measured in millilitres (ml) and litres (L)?

We practiced measuring the liquid in different sized containers. It was a little confusing on some containers because they showed measurements in millilitres, cups and ounces. Whaea Kat said we should just concentrate on using the millilitres.

We found out that even though containers can look quite different they can still hold the same amount of water.

With these two containers we were pretty fairly split between the taller plastic container and the flatter, wider glass container of which one would hold the most liquid.

The plastic container was the winner.

This 2L ice cream container held as much water as the plastic jug. We all thought the jug would hold much more.

Wet, Wet, Wednesday!

What a day it was on Wednesday. It was such a storm. Rain, thunder and lightening!
Great motivation for some of us when we were writing our Haiku poems.

Haiku Poetry

We are learning to:
  • understand the structure of a Haiku poem.
  • experiment with language, using rhythm and imagery to create our own haiku.

Haiku Poetry

A type of Japanese poetry composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven and five syllables.
Reflects on aspects of nature e.g weather, animals, seasons, that creates a picture in your mind.

Each of our writing groups will share their writing in a slideshow.

Hukanui Marae

It was such an exciting day. The entire school was going on buses to visit Whaea Robyn's marae. Some of us in the class had been to a marae before but many had not. We were excited and nervous and full of energy.

Places to Learn

What does learning look like in Room 11?

We have the choice of places to sit and tools to use such as iPads and Chrome books.
Where do you like to sit to read or write?
Where do you learn best?

Keep Active

We love to keep active in our class. At this time of the year it is not always great weather to go outside so sometimes we dance and have some fun.
Whaea Kat brought in a selfie stick so that we could take photos of all of us.
